â- BMB Graduate Research Assistant, Nicholas Spellmon, has good news to share with us. He has accepted a post-doctorate position in Dr. Jochen Zimmer's lab at the University of Virginia to study the O-antigen ABC transporter, one of the early steps in LPS synthesis. He will be utilizing cryo-EM, X-ray crystallography and biochemical tools to shed light on how the O-antigen is "flipped" into the periplasm. Congratulations Nick!

â- Our Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Immunology fall seminar schedule has 4 spots still available (2 in September, 2 in October). If you have a speaker you would like to invite for these spots, contact Bharati Mitra bmitra@med.wayne.edu.

â- Our departmental hall signs have been installed. If you haven't yet, please add the names of your lab members. There is also a slot to add a picture of your lab research.

â- Next BMI Faculty meeting will be held on Thursday, August 9, 11:30am-12:00pm, 7364 Scott Hall. Special guest: Denise Figlewicz, Assistant Vice President, Research Enhancement and Development.

â- An Immunology Focus Group seminar was added for July 26, 2018, Thursday, 1:30- 2:30pm, located in the Wertz Auditorium, 2nd Floor, HDCRC. The Speaker, Prasad S. Adusumilli, MD FACS FCCP, is a candidate for the KCI Molecular Therapeutics Program Leader position. He is a surgeon and works on Cancer Immunotherapy. Title: "CAR T-cell Therapy for Solid Tumors". Light refreshments will be served for seminar attendees.

â- Wayne State University School of Medicine faculty and staff, and their families, are invited to attend the School of Medicine Sesquicentennial Family Fun Day, set for Sunday, July 29, from 1 to 4 p.m. at The Parade Company in Detroit. Dean Jack D. Sobel will be hosting this event. This event, open to faculty and staff and their family members only, will offer a behind-the-scenes peek at the inner workings of the America's Thanksgiving Parade held annually along Woodward in Detroit, including up close views of its many iconic floats, along with a barbecue picnic.
