â- Dr. James H. Holda passed away on July 27, 2019. Jim was one of Dr. Robert Swanborg's Ph.D. students. He had received his degree from Wayne State University in 1982. After a postdoctoral period with Dr. Henry Claman at the University of Colorado in Denver, Jim joined the faculty of the University of Akron, where he remained until his death in a tragic accident. He was well liked and respected by faculty and his fellow students and will be fondly remembered by his peers.

â- The BMI 2019 Department Summer Picnic is Wednesday, August 21, 2019, 11:30 a.m. at Belle Isle Shelter #12. Attendees are asked to either bring a dish to share or make a donation ($5 students and $10 faculty) to help cover the costs of site rental, permits and food. The department will provide the plates & utensils, hamburgers, hotdogs, buns and all the fixings. Alcohol is permitted at the shelter, but we ask that you please BYOB. Donations can be given to the BMI office. The sign-up sheet for dish to share is located on the BMI office door. RSVP by Friday, August 16th. â- TALK CANCELLED: Pathology Lecture Series, Speaker, Momchilo (Momo) Vuyisich, Ph.D., Founder and Chief Science Officer of Viome, Los Alamos, New Mexico, Adjunct Professor, University of New Mexico and New Mexico Tech. Title: "Systems biology, machine learning, and personalized diets for prevention and treatment of chronic diseases." Tuesday, August 14, 2019, 1:00-2:00 p.m., at Harper Morse Auditorium (4th floor Harper Hospital).

â- A symposium on Emerging Concepts and Technologies in Virology will be held at the University of Michigan Thursday September 12. All are welcome. There is no charge for attendees. Program information is in the attached flyer, and you can register via this link.
