â- Drs. Akins and Sobel and their research team have published consecutive papers on bacterial vaginosis in 2019. The first, entitled "Prognostic indicators of recurrence of bacterial vaginosis" (J Clin Microbiol. 2019: e00227-19) identifies a diagnostic molecular marker that predicts which patients will recur after conventional therapy for bacterial vaginosis. The follow-up paper, "Conventional oral and secondary high dose vaginal metronidazole therapy for recurrent bacterial vaginosis: clinical outcomes, impacts of sex and menses" (Diagn Infect Dis 12: 12 2297-2307), shows that patients who fail conventional therapy can nevertheless achieve remission with additional topical therapy. These results offer new strategies to counter the 80% recurrence rates currently experienced by afflicted women.
â- A symposium on Emerging Concepts and Technologies in Virology will be held at the University of Michigan Thursday September 12. All are welcome. There is no charge for attendees. Program information is in the attached flyer, and you can register via this link.
