â- Drs. Akins and Sobel and their research team have published consecutive papers on bacterial vaginosis in 2019. The first, entitled "Prognostic indicators of recurrence of bacterial vaginosis" (J Clin Microbiol. 2019: e00227-19) identifies a diagnostic molecular marker that predicts which patients will recur after conventional therapy for bacterial vaginosis. The follow-up paper, "Conventional oral and secondary high dose vaginal metronidazole therapy for recurrent bacterial vaginosis: clinical outcomes, impacts of sex and menses" (Diagn Infect Dis 12: 12 2297-2307), shows that patients who fail conventional therapy can nevertheless achieve remission with additional topical therapy. These results offer new strategies to counter the 80% recurrence rates currently experienced by afflicted women.
