BMI Weekly News

April 5, 2021

Message from the Chair:

As communicated by President Wilson on Saturday (link), COVID-19 cases have been increasing significantly, and have reached levels that will likely trigger a new round of reduced in-person activity on campus, effective Wednesday April 7.  Should this come to pass, the following restrictions will be imposed:

  • All on-campus, face-to-face instruction is suspended. The only exception is for clinical rotations in the licensed health professions.
  • Laboratory research units must take steps to reduce current time on-site activity for authorized personnel by 25 percent effective April 7th, 2021, and prepare a contingency plan for an additional reduction of time on-site as the current situation evolves this coming week. This reduced level of current time on-site does not apply to fully vaccinated individuals currently involved with authorized on-site research activities. Refer to the research website for information updates and further guidance.
  • With the exception of critical infrastructure employees, those who can work effectively from home should do so
  • Additional restrictions are listed here: link.

Faculty can expect to be required to submit revised Standard Operating Procedures documents that address the changes.  Students and other research workers should be in communication with their PIs to learn how the changes will affect them.  I expect that more information will be forthcoming soon.

Collectively, we have done well with our adjustments to the pandemic reality.  I hope that everyone who can, has taken the available steps to get vaccinated, which is the quickest safe path to a return to normal.

Be safe,

Phil
