News:

  • Two exciting new developments in BMI-connected science
  1. 2024 Science magazine Breakthrough of the Year

Work in the areas of virology, structural biology, antiviral compound development, and public health interventions has resulted in the development of lenacapavir, a new drug that can prevent HIV infections for at least 6-months after only a single injection.  The drug interacts with HIV capsid proteins in ways that prevent them from entering the nucleus to start new infections, as well as preventing capsids from leaving the nucleus during ongoing infections.  This drug has the potential to greatly reduce the ongoing impact of the HIV pandemic. https://www.science.org/content/article/breakthrough-2024  (attached as lencapavir.pdf).

  1. From the Darkness

In case there is a question about whether there will be anything useful left for young scientists to build long careers around, it turns out that human (and probably most other types) of genomes encode many more proteins than previously identified.  The “dark proteome” is the set of proteins expressed from short (or small) small open reading frames that are scattered around human, and likely other eukaryotic genomes.  Emerging evidence suggests that they will serve important biological functions. https://www.science.org/doi/epdf/10.1126/science.adu8277.
