Brief bio:  In 1973, Mel Clay received a B.S. in Biology and started working in the Department of Laboratory Animal Research while completing his M.S. in Biology. So, he has had a 47-year career with the university. One of his first positions was in a research lab working on leptospirosis and malaria in the Department of Comparative Medicine. That department was dissolved in 1979 and Mel transferred to the Department of Immunology and Microbiology. Throughout the 1980s the Immunology and Microbiology Department offered a variety of teaching laboratories in addition to the medical microbiology laboratories (which had about twice the contact hours compared to current day) which Mel supported. He was an instructor for the School of Pharmacology medical technology teaching labs which the Department of Immunology and Microbiology offered. He was also supported several lab courses that were offered for the Immunology and Microbiology graduate students. In addition to his role as an instructor in the medical technologists’ program and coordinating graduate and medical student teaching labs, Mel supported the departmental research labs by providing glassware service, stocking chemical and media supplies, and facilitating relocation of lab space for the faculty when necessary. [Thanks to Dr. Jackson for the history.]
