Speaker: Dr. Giuseppe Maulucci, Professor, Director of the Metabolic Intelligence Laboratory, at the School of Medicine of the Catholic University of Sacred Heart (UCSC) in Rome, Italy.

Title: “From Metabolic Imaging to Digital Avatars: Modeling Human Metabolism Across Scales”

This seminar explores the development of digital metabolic avatars as multiscale computational representations of human metabolism, integrating metabolic imaging–derived biomarkers with hybrid data-driven and mechanistic models. The approach aims to bridge spatially resolved metabolic phenotyping and personalized metabolic prediction, with applications in precision medicine and nutrition.

Short Bio: 

Dr. Giuseppe Maulucci is a professor in applied physics and biomedical sciences and Director of the Metabolic Intelligence Laboratory at the School of Medicine of the Catholic University of Sacred Heart (UCSC) in Rome, Italy, where he works at the interface of metabolic imaging, computational modeling, and artificial intelligence. He received his academic training in physics, with a specialization in applied and biomedical physics, and has developed a multidisciplinary research program bridging quantitative biophysics and translational metabolism. His research focuses on the development of digital metabolic avatars and quantitative metabolic imaging biomarkers, integrating imaging data, biochemical measurements, and hybrid modeling approaches that combine mechanistic metabolic models with machine learning techniques. His work addresses human metabolism across multiple biological scales, from cellular metabolic processes to whole-body dynamics. Dr. Maulucci has been principal investigator and coordinator of competitive research projects funded at the national and European level, including projects supported by Horizon Europe–related initiatives, and translational funding programs. His research activities span methodological innovation and applied research, with the goal of enabling interpretable, personalized metabolic modeling for precision medicine and nutritional science.
