•  Congratulations to the following BMI students: 

•  Vanessa Kamdoum for successfully defending her thesis, "Studies of the norovirus protease as a target for antiviral therapeutics" earning her M.S. degree.  Advisor: Dr. Ladislau Kovari 

•  Jennifer Reish for successfully defending her thesis, "A robust dual-plasmid system for gene alteration in Staphylococcus aureus using an inducible Cas9 enzyme" earning her M.S. degree.  Advisor: Dr. Andrew Berti 

•  Paul Breen for successful defending his dissertation, “Vibrio cholerae and the Zebrafish Microbiome” earning his Ph.D. degree.  Advisor: Dr. Jeffrey Withey 

•  Congratulations to Dr. Yuan He and lab on his first R01 grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).  Dr. He is the principal investigator of “Molecular Mechanism of NLRP3 Inflammasome Activation,” a five-year, $1.9 million grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The project will investigate the molecular mechanism of a natural component of the human immune system that contributes to the pathogenesis of a variety of inflammatory diseases. BMI Associate Professor, Dr. Zhe Yang, is a co-investigator on this grant. Yuan He NIH Grant  

•  Congratulations Dr. Domenico Gatti on the publication of two articles:

Naik, A.R., George, K., Arslanturk, S., Taatjes, D.J., Jena, B.P. (2020).  Nanoscale imaging using differential expansion microscopy. Histochem Cell Biol.153: 469-480.  Dr. Gatti is co-first Author in this article, for which I have developed all the Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI) components. A figure of the article was chosen as the Cover of the Journal Issue, and a reviewer was asked to write an Editorial Comment on the article.

Technol. in press https://doi.org/10.1088/2632-2153/aba8e8.  Dr. Gatti is the Corresponding Author of this article, which describes a new methodology for the analysis of microscopy images in pathology, and features an international team including members from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden.  

•  Congratulations to Dr. Robert Lisak (PI) along with Dr. Amit Br-Or (PI, U of Penn) on their new NINDS grant titled “Molecular profiling of exosomes from multiple sclerosis B cells”. Dr. Joyce Benjamins is also an investigator here at WSU on this grant. 

•  Danica Dabich, Ph.D., professor emeritus of Biochemistry at Wayne State University School of Medicine, passed away on June 20, 2020 at the age of 89. Danica Dabich, PhD
