News:  

•  Congratulations to Dr. Jeffrey Withey, who recently was selected as one of 13 Fulbright Scholar Alumni Ambassadors in the US for the period 2020-2022. As an Alumni Ambassador, he is an official representative of the Fulbright Scholar programs supported by the US State Department. Dr. Withey will advocate, advise, and support faculty from throughout the US, especially in STEM fields, to apply to become Fulbright Scholars. https://www.cies.org/alumni-ambassadors/jeffrey-h-withey   

The Fulbright Scholar program is the flagship international exchange program funded by the US government and has programs in over 125 countries. Dr. Withey was a Fulbright Scholar in 2014-15, spending 5 months in India. •  Mark your calendars: 2020 Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology Departmental Retreat Program has been tentatively scheduled for Friday, October 30, 2020.  More details to follow.   

Events: 

•  Our first BMI Seminar is Tuesday, September 22, 2020, 11:30 am. Speaker, Hannah Rowe, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology, Oregon State University. Title: “Direct bacterial-viral interactions promote respiratory transmission”.  Zoom Link: TBA.  Hosted by: Dr. Jeffrey Withey jwithey@med.wayne.edu  

•  The 24th Annual C.P. Lee Endowed Graduate Student Research Presentation Day (GSRPD) is going virtual.  Join us on Thursday, November 19, 2020 via Zoom as we celebrate another year of graduate student STEM research at Wayne State with keynote speaker Dr. Marlene Belfort of University at Albany - SUNY. 

  Abstract submissions open Monday, August 31st and will stay open until Friday, September 26th. Due to time limitations of a virtual format, we will feature 5 oral presentations and 20 poster rapid-fire presentations this year. As tradition, the top 7 presentations will receive monetary awards, so get out there and show us what you've got!
